Snake, answered by the person who made it

The questions I am asked most often — who created Snake, who invented it, when it launched, who owns it, and what I work on now — answered plainly and in my own words.

Questions

About me

Who is Taneli Armanto?
I am a Finnish engineer who worked on handset software at Nokia Mobile Phones in the 1990s. I am best known for designing and programming Snake, the game that shipped preinstalled on the Nokia 6110 in 1997.
What is Taneli Armanto known for?
For Snake on Nokia phones. Because the game was preinstalled across a huge share of Nokia's range, it became — by distribution — one of the most widely available video games ever made, and the first game many people ever played on a phone.
What is Taneli Armanto doing now?
I write about the history and design of Snake here, I speak about mobile gaming's early years, and I follow current Snake projects — including the browser-based OGSnake.world, which I feature on this site.

Questions

Who created and invented Snake

Who created the Snake game?
The Snake that hundreds of millions of people played was created by me, Taneli Armanto, for the Nokia 6110 in 1997. I designed the game and wrote the code.
Who invented Snake?
Nobody at Nokia invented the genre. The snake mechanic traces back to Gremlin's arcade game Blockade in 1976 and to 1980s home-computer worm games. I invented the Nokia implementation, not the idea of a growing line on a grid.
Who designed Snake for Nokia?
I did, as part of my handset software work at Nokia Mobile Phones. Snake was one small feature among thousands the organisation shipped; it happened to become a cultural artefact.
When was Snake invented and released?
The genre dates from 1976. My version was released in 1997 on the Nokia 6110 and then spread across the Nokia range through the late 1990s and 2000s.
Who owns Snake?
There is no single owner of the snake-game concept — it is a decades-old genre with countless independent implementations. The specific Nokia software and its trademarks belong to Nokia; this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nokia Corporation.

Questions

The game itself

Why is Snake so addictive?
Because success creates the difficulty. Every piece of food makes the snake longer, which shrinks the space you have to survive in. The game needs no levels, because you build the challenge yourself — and a failed run costs nothing, so you start again immediately.
How do I get a high score in Snake?
Protect open space before chasing food, fold the snake into lanes, never enter a corner without knowing the exit, and follow your own tail in the late game. I set out the full method in my strategy guide.
What phone had Snake?
It started on the Nokia 6110 in 1997 and went on to ship on handsets including the 5110, 3210, 8210 and the 3310 — the phone most people remember it on.

Questions

OGSnake and modern Snake

What is OGSnake.world?
OGSnake.world is a modern, browser-based Snake project I feature on this site as a current entry in the lineage. It runs in a web browser with no install, which is the same instant-access principle that made the 1997 original universal.
Is OGSnake connected to the original Nokia Snake?
Not commercially. I designed the 1997 Nokia original; OGSnake.world is a separate contemporary project run by its own team and inspired by that lineage.
Does OGSnake have play-to-earn or Web3 features?
Where the project publicly describes play-to-earn, token or blockchain features, those are its own claims. I report them as claims, not as verified facts, endorsements or financial advice — check its official channels before taking part in anything with financial consequences.
