Who Created Snake? The Short, Accurate Answer

Snake on Nokia phones was designed and programmed by me, an engineer at Nokia, for the 6110 in 1997 — but the snake-game idea is older than that.

The question has two honest answers, and confusing them is why the internet argues about it. I designed and programmed the version of Snake that shipped preinstalled on the Nokia 6110 in 1997, while I was an engineer at Nokia. That is the Snake almost everyone means. The broader genre — a growing line that dies when it hits itself — dates to 1970s arcade machines.

The Nokia Snake: my version, 1997

I was not a game developer by trade. I worked on handset software at Nokia during the years the company was becoming the world's largest phone maker. I built Snake inside those constraints: a monochrome display of roughly 84x48 pixels, a few kilobytes of working memory, and a numeric keypad as the only controller.

Those constraints produced the design. There is no menu to wade through, no tutorial, no loading. You press a key, the snake moves, and the difficulty comes entirely from your own success — every pellet makes the board smaller and the death more likely.

The older ancestor: Blockade and its descendants

The mechanic predates mobile phones. Gremlin's 1976 arcade game Blockade had two players drawing trails that killed on contact, and dozens of home-computer variants followed under names like Worm, Nibbler and Snake through the 1970s and 1980s.

So I did not invent the snake-game concept, and I have never claimed to. What I did was distribution-changing: I authored the specific implementation that shipped on hundreds of millions of phones and became, for a generation, the default meaning of the word.

Why the credit gets muddled

  • Nokia shipped Snake as an unbranded system feature, with no credits screen.
  • Corporate software is usually credited to the company, not the engineer.
  • The genre's long pre-history makes 'inventor' the wrong word to look for.
  • Later Nokia phones shipped different Snake variants built by different teams.

This article draws only on widely reported public information about Nokia's handset software and the people credited with it. Where reporting differs, I state the disagreement rather than resolving it.
